Smoothie Bowls for Days

It might be the warm weather, but over the last few weeks I have been loving coming up with new smoothie recipes. I have also started playing with the smoothie bowl.

In all honesty I used to not like the idea of a smoothie or even a smoothie bowl as it is an easy way to get in an excessive amount of calories sometimes way to many if you ask me especially when someone is trying to control carb count or overall sugar intake.

So what about the smoothie bowl?

Here is what I love about them.

You get to chew something!

Why is chewing important?

  1. It helps your body start to produces digestive juices
  2. Chewing gives your body time to realize it is getting food which trigger feelings of fullness (satiety)

  3. You will eat less overall when you spend time chewing your food, again this is where fullness comes in.

  4. It allows you to absorb more nutrients from your food.

  5. It also helps you sit down and enjoy your food.

Ok back to the smoothie bowl. There are many iteratations of this delightful afternoon treat, and here is my Rebel Health version

Rebel Smoothie Bowl

  • ½ cup frozen blueberries

  • 6 frozen cherries

  • ½ coconut milk

  • 1 scoop vanilla bone broth protein, or collagen peptides

  • 2 TBS ground golden flax

  • 2 TBS hemp hearts

  • 1 TBS cocoa nibs

  • A few frozen berries

Combine blueberries, cherries, coconut milk, and protein powder in blender until fluffy.

Place in bowl and top with flax, hemp hearts, cocoa nibs, and frozen berries.

Find a cozy spot to sit and enjoy, or share it with your kids like I often end up doing.
